Would be interesting if we could get a mechanism in here that would measure the nileage all our bills, collectively, have traveled.
What would really be cool is...in addition to the numbers for example, "Your bills have traveled a total of 50,000 miles" would be a bar graph, representing various milestones, and how close you are to them...for example, 25,000 miles would be once around the Earth, 238,000 miles would be a trip to the moon, you could put stuff in between like, 3 trips around the Earth, round trip to the moon....you could have a Trip to Mars or Venus in there, even a trip to the Sun (93 million miles) etc.

But I think that would be a pile of fun! The numbers in plain words, and then a number of little bar graphs showing how close you are to various goals or milestones (I suggested a few) - you could also do a light-second (186,282 miles) and othe fun stuff.

PLEASE make this happen, I think it would be a ton o' fun! You'd need to make it count back to the beginning for each current user....

I track stats from every hit I get in a spreadsheet. My current Sum(miles) is 153,661.

As I look at "My Bill Summary", I see that the ...

(a) "Average Speed of Hits in days" is close enough to what I have computed that I don't worry about the difference.
(b) "Average Distance Miles" is quite a bit off from what I am expecting.
(c) "Average Miles per Day" looks like it is a simple division of (a)/(b).

I would like to know the algorityms used, especially in (b).

I would also like to propose that (c) is definately on the wrong track.
Wouldn't it be better to Sum(miles) and divide it by Number_of_Days([Max(date_entered) - Min(date_entered)]) ?

Post  Kalisiin Thu Feb 17, 2011 6:05 pm

I have not been tracking distance and would like to begin doing so.
But I really don't want to have to go back and look at 258 hits...and make sure I got all of them...and that I didn't dupe any, etc.
I suspect I probably am at least close to twice around the Earth (50,000 miles) because I have over 20 hits in Washington State, and those are over 2000 miles each.

EDIT: I looked on Bill Summary, and my average distance is 205 miles...multiply by 258 hits, and I am at 52,890 miles.
I know that isn't a 100% accurate figure, but it should be fairly close. Like I said, I suspected I was somewhere in the neighborhood of 50,000 miles....which is twice around the Earth.

I'd still like to see this done, and in a nice graphical way that can be put into one's main Profile page.

Just as a thought...

Perhaps a graph along the top of a rectangle that runs, say, from 1 to 10...or whatever is appropriate for that user...
And then, in the rectangle...on the left, a graphical representation of the Earth...and a bar graph showing how many times around the Earth your bills have gone. In this case, each number along the top would represent 25,000 miles.
Then, the next rectangle could be a graphical depiction of the moon...maybe even a moon crescent...and the same thing along the top...but maybe you run the numbers in increments of 0.5 - 5.0 and the bar graph again. in this case, each 0.5 mark would represent 119,000 miles (equivalent to 1/2 the distance between the Earth and the moon)
Then you could do for each planet if you wanted...as well as one having a graphical depiction of a light bulb...for one light second, which is 186,282 miles.
And also one for the sun...which is 93 million miles from Earth.

The planet and the sun ones you'd run from 0.1 to 1.0 or whatever is appropriate for that user.

I bet this could be done...and done in a really neat way...and it might really attract some new users if you could show this stuff!!

Addendum...with regards the planets...obviously, the distance is constantly changing, depending on which side of the sun each planet is in relation to the Earth...for our purposes, we would be calculating the distance between the orbits of the planets...thus, the closest the said planet would come to Earth, assuming they are on the same side of the sun.
Here's measurements...

Mercury - 56,730,000 (roughly 57 million miles)
Venus - 26,040,000 (roughly 26 million miles)
Mars - 46,500,000 (46.5 million miles exactly)
Jupiter - 390,600,000 (roughly 391 million miles)
Saturn - 790,500,000 (790.5 million miles exactly)
Uranus - 1,692,600,000 (roughly 1 billion, 693 million miles)
Neptune - 2,706,300,000 (roughly 2 billion, 706 million miles)
Pluto - 3,580,500,000 (3 billion, 580.5 million miles exactly)

Yes, gang, Pluto's still a planet as far as I am concerned!!
("Kuiper Belt object" my ass!!) ("Dwarf planet" my ass!!)
Clyde Tombaugh would be spinning in his grave...RIP, Clyde!!

Incidentally, to get the farthest distance, if you wanted to use that...supposing they were on opposite sides of the sun, you'd need to add 2 AU (astronomical units) to each total - an astronomical unit is the distance between the Earth and the Sun - 93 million miles.
So, 2 AU would be 186 million miles.
Why two, I hear you cry...well, it's simple, really...first you have to go from the Earth to the Sun...then the sun to the other side of Earth's orbit...2 AU...then use the totals given above for the shortest distance between the planets...the distance their orbits are from one another...and presto!

Yes, I know, I have too much time on my hands to figure all this stuff out.
But it would be fun to have this sort of graphical representation...and it would be something NOT offered at the other site.

Would be way awesome if anyone could achieve getting a bill outside the solar system!! (metaphorically speaking, of course...in other words, a total accumulated mileage in excess of the distance to Pluto.)

That would be seriously awesome!

Perhaps ALL HITS from the site, in total, maybe already equal that much...ya think???

Hello,

yes, I like the idea to make some charts/graphs/tables about the total distance per user / site wide etc.
I will start programming on that this coming weekend.

At the same time I am going to check the formula for the existing speed reports.

I will let you guys know. Thanks for the nice idea.

Thank you, Markus.
Thank you for all you do for us on this site!

I, for one, am looking forward, with great anticipation, to seeing the results of what you come up with for this...I just tossed my ideas out there...like I said, could be lots of fun!!

Cool...Have to check it out now! And thanks for telling me it was a cool suggestion...I thought it was, anyway.

Hummm...I'm not seeing it...help??

OK...I see it now...but there does not appear to be a way to put in into your own profile...
Also, the graphical representations are not yet done...

But so far, pretty cool.

I'm still looking for something to include into my profile page.

Of course, I could always mock up a table, and just use the given stats....but I'm looking for one that is insertable into your personal profile.

Incidentally, I sorta agree with Markus only going for Mercury, Venus, Mars, the moon, and the sun. Jupiter is WAY far out there.
Still, though...a light-second might have been sorta fun.

A light second is 186,282 miles - the distance light travels in one second.

Ah, I found it - under My Bill Summary.

6.2 times around Earth and about 65 % of the way to the moon.

New suggestion: Top 10 Slug Hits - Slowest in Miles per Day.

I just got a hit that went 3 miles in 510 days - a rate of 0.00588 miles per day.

Site Wide Bill Summary

Cleanup on Aisle 12 ...

Two rows of Star Bills, the second row has only 1 entry and it seems to link to the Site Wide All Bills screen.

An "O" Block bill. There are no "O" bills (looks too much like Zero). "G" FRB only went to "H" block in 2006.

Two "Z" Block bills. Again, there are no "Z" blocks from 1963 forward. These two look suspicious since they have very similar serial numbers and are entered from the same location.

Today's Site Suggestion --

The Bill Hits/Entered % chart that appears on the User Profile:

Could you repeat the Y axis (Hits/Entered %) also on the right hand side of the graph? (Or if you can't repeat it, move it over there)

I think it would make that graph easier to read, since the end of the green, blue and red lines end near the right hand side.

Markus,
I'm trying to understand the newest version of the "Bills Hit/Entered %" graph. My left axis goes from Zero to 14, my right axis goes from Zero to 10. The 12 on the left looks exactly equal to the 9 on the right.

I computed the ratio for my Ones and it should be 311 Hits / 2,468 Entered, or 12.6 %, so the left side is correct. What gives with the right side?

Hi,

I had to rollback the graph version, because of the 3D effect of the graph the right axis does not match the left one. The graph generator would create the axis for another group. Did not look right, I will try another version later.

Ya know...this topic has continually been used...even though the original topic was long ago covered.

I'm beginning to think we should have a separate Forum just for Site Suggestions...so that each suggestion would then have it's own discussion thread and progress.
