Ever spend an old-style bill,
and have the cashier/counterperson say they never saw one before? This happened to me with an old-style twenty when buying a drink at a Panthers hockey game. The kid looked like he was nineteen and too young to have remembered when they were common.
I asked someone "here" to post this question "over there". Hope he will do that.

Not me.
But I still think it is funny to run up a bill of $9.xx at a fast-food joint, and then pay with a five and 3 Toms...and watch the teenage cashier's head explode.
I don't often get to do this, but, when I do get to, it's a treat.
Re: Ever spend an old-style bill,
I don't see many Old Styles any more, although I have a hit on one (a five) here at TrackDollar.
I can't say I have ever had the reaction on Old Styles as you have, but I have had the occasional "aren't they rare" comment about my twos.

I am the person you asked.
EJKorvette, I suppose I could relay your message at Where's George if you get permission from WG's administrator, Mr. Hank. I'm unsure of the rules regarding that, and don't want to put my account in jeopardy. I don't know what your issue is with WG. I have no animosity for either tracking site and wish both the best--the more, the merrier. They both have their ups and downs.
On another note, do we really need to refer to Where's George as "that other place?" It seems like saying "The Place That Must Not Be Named." Not typing TrackDollar's name is prevalent at WG, as well. I don't understand why; just use the website's name.
Anyway, happy currency tracking.

Re: Ever spend an old-style bill,
Never hurts to ask. Besides I think this topic would get some good discussion over there.

Re: Ever spend an old-style bill,
Maybe someone from over there will see this and post this question. More interesting than the endless discussions about replacing the paper dollar with various coins like some foreign countries (with much smaller populations) have done.

Hey...if they would relax over on that other place, then I wouldn't have a problem writing their name here.
Hank is the one who started that. Try entering "trackdollar" in any bill note you enter over there and you watch what happens.

I once almost got in a fight with a vending machine when I got a 1957 1 dollar bill in my change.

A 1957 ?!?!? That would be a Silver Certificate, no? I would imagine the blue ink for the serial numbers would give certain cash machines fits.
A few years ago, the cash machines at DC's Metro subway system would refuse any bills that had stamps on the front. If I knew I was riding the train, I carried back-stamped-only ones with me.
In related news and in response to Kalisiin's teasing, I used 15 ones in paying for parking yesterday in downtown DC. Now all I need are some kiosks at gas stations in Queen Anne county, MD. :~)

Too late for ya in Queen Anne's...just as it's too late for me in Lackawanna, Tim. All's fair in love, war, and TD contests!! And Lackawanna STILL hurts, dude...that is right next door to my home county of Monroe, PA. In fact...getting Monroe (or Northampton) before me...would be the only way to better drive a stake into my heart
Seriously, we need to meet up and trade sometime, I can't get a hit in DC to save my freaking life!!
One hour and thirty two minutes later...
EDIT: I take that back!!
We can still trade sometime, though, Tim.

Yes it was a silver certificate. It got me interested in collecting and I've been collecting ever sence. I also got a 1953 5 silver cirtifacate. It wasn't the blue ink that messed it up, it was the difference in the design and lack of magnetic ink.

Well, at least I finally GOT it...DC looks good in orange on my map. Now, I wonder if I can try that with RI. I'd have a full East Coast if I could get RI....but I can't get RI to save my freaking life!!
Other reason
Actually, it probably wouldn't accept it because of the lack of magnetic ink and the totally different design (look closer at the border, comparing it with a Federal Reserve Note). I doubt the blue ink would make any difference as most bill validators use a red light to illuminate the note.goldswimmerbj wrote:I once almost got in a fight with a vending machine when I got a 1957 1 dollar bill in my change.
Besides, if you have a $1 Silver Certificate, even ratty ones are worth a couple of bucks to the right buyer. I only have two, and never received one in change.

Re: Ever spend an old-style bill,
I have spent several old style bills. That said, they are becoming quite hard for me to get in circulation.
I recently spent an old style $50 (1993 series) as part of my buy-in for a poker tournament at Hollywood Casino.
A few months back, I also received a 1977 series $20 when I broke a $50 at a liquor store. I spent that someplace, but I can't remember where...
I also have an old style $10 (1990 series) and $20 (1988A series) in my desk right now, that I've received on a few of my most recent bank journeys. I plan on spending them, but I want to get a bunch I can unload at once on some unsuspecting teenager (this is my entertainment--see the Tom Stories thread). I don't know how long it will take, but I can wait.
I work at a school part time as a substitute teacher, and I once had a 14 year old student come to me toward the end of class asking if her $5 bill was real. Turns out it was a 1981A series $5. The very last of the old style bills were printed at the end of 1999, so most teenagers probably don't remember them. Makes me feel old and I'm only 26.
