Any collector interest?
I posted this at WG in their collector forum, but in case some people don't go over there, I thought I'd post this here too. Lets see if you people can see it...:
I found this in a strap today. Someone cashed in a hoard of 2s, and I found some nice ones, but this was the prize:
Front:
Back:
As you can see, this bill was once taped to something. There's no tape on the bill, but the residue is still there. Some of this can probably be carefully scratched off, but I just left it. There's no other problems with the note, besides circulation and folds.
This isn't an auction, but I will entertain offers by PM. If I get a decent offer, I'd be willing to sell. I'd also be interested in any general info on what others have sold for, based on condition.
I'd even entertain offers in a thread; if you don't have a problem with it, I don't either. I know some of you aren't collectors, or interested in twos, but I had to show this off. I doubt I'll find another one.

Well, considering someone offered $100 already, I guess you'd be out of the running.
I decided to auction the bill anyway. I can probably get a bit over the offered amount with the interest it's received. I can't do any worse than that...

Nice find. I've never collected bills myself, but I've always found it interesting what errors pop up.

I agree. I'm more of a hoarder. I keep collectible bills but don't really collect them, if that makes sense. After awhile I sell them off, and hopefully they find good homes. It's amazing what can be found strap searching though...and that's why I do it. The thrill of the hunt I suppose...
Apparently 20,000 bills with this error were produced. CU examples go for around $400-$500. I wonder how many still exist in circulation? I found one after going through over 72,000 2s. Sounds like a complex math problem.

LOL. I've found 3 web notes so far of the 70,000 plus $1 bills I've gone through. Those are only worth about $10-$30 each, but it's fun finding them.

I look through all my ones too. I have a stack of 70 1995s sitting here, but no web notes. Haven't found one yet. That includes 93s and 88As as well.

Hell, I didn't notice the error!
Well, that makes things a little different.
Seriously, I probably could not give you the kind of dollar you might get for that on an auction.

Nice find and I hope you closed the deal on that $ 100 offer. I certainly couldn't match it.

I gambled and put it up for auction in the collector forums at WG. I figured I could get a least $100 given the interest from about 7 different people (a couple of which who were regulars at Coin Talk and joined WG just to have a shot at bidding) and 3 appraisals from other potential bidders that estimated I could get more than $100.
The auction finishes tonight around 9 PM, and I'll just say I'm quite pleased with how it's gone.

You'll have to let us know the final sale price.
A once-in-a-lifetime find, I'm sure! You'll probably be telling your grandkids about this one.

It ended up at $266.66. I honestly expected to get about $150, but two people REALLY wanted it and it pushed the bidding. I saw a few better examples go for around $250 elsewhere on the net, so I made out like a bandit. I suppose if you're a collector, you can justify paying a little more; it's not like there's a ton of these being offered everyday.
Definitely my best find in a strap. I doubt I'll ever find another one. If I do a little math, I would in theory find one in every 29,536 1976 Series twos I would look through (20,000/590,720,000, albeit not accounting for all the bills destroyed over the past 35+ years). I've looked through about 12,000 1976 twos according to my data, so I'm well ahead of the curve.

Re: Any collector interest?
I'm only posting in this because of the previous conversation.
First one I've found, and in decent condition. At first the ink looked funny and I almost thought it was fake.

Nice find. I've gone through about 50,000 singles since the last web note that I found.
