Random thoughts about old sitcoms.
Remember the show Family Matters? It started out a really good show then got real weird and actually kind of stupid near the end. What I could never understand is Steve's crush on Laura. OK so she was the girl next door, seeing her every day I suppose a crush could develop. However she treated him like total garbage and she really wasn't all that good looking, not ugly mind you just not extraordinary looking. Even when he had a girlfriend later on in the show who treated him great and was very good looking. So she had personality and looks, he still had a crush on Laura even though she treated him like garbage. What does this say about our society? I guess the Eurithmics (sp?) were right some of them like to be abused.

Maybe....but you keep harping on about LOOKS. That is half of what is wrong with our society today. So many people have low self-esteem because they don't measure up...they weren't visited by the Gene Fairy at birth, they weren't hit with the pretty stick.
Our society's values are all fouled up, bass-ackward and stupid. What SHOULD matter....doesn't seem to...and what SHOULDN'T matter....does.
I mean, look at me...160 IQ. What the hell has it gotten me?
I bet you 90% of people could tell you the last two American Idols (I can't) but less than 10% of Americans could tell you their two Senators and one Representative to Congress - Senators Pat Toomey and
Robert Casey Jr. Congressman Lou Barletta....in my case.
Re: Random thoughts about old sitcoms.
I agree with you in principal but my point was actually that Laura's personality on the show stunk. She was not at all nice to Steve so maybe she was good looking? Well, she wasn't ugly but not all that cute either. My point was she didn't have anything going for her. Steve on the other hand had something going for him and even after he had a girl that liked him that had both a great personality and looks he still had a thing for Laura. Pretty messed up if you ask me. Are sitcoms a reflection of our society or is society a reflection of sitcoms or a little of both. I feel it is the later. TV shows can have a big influence. One show that I am thankful has ended (not a sitcom) had a major influence on woman's fashion and I feel not for the better. I don't want to get into it but lets just say it brought down the standards of dress in a professional setting.Kalisiin wrote:Matt_How wrote:Remember the show Family Matters? Re: Random thoughts about old sitcoms.
True.
But, again...our society seems to care TOO MUCH about the horseshit that shouldn't matter....and to NOT care about the things that DO matter, that SHOULD matter to people.
People are generally stupid, easily fooled, easily distracted, and I despair for the survival of our species, I truly do.
