Anyone Have a Billion Ideas? Empty Anyone Have a Billion Ideas?

With the Powerball lottery sitting at $1,400,000,000.00 and expected to rise much further by Wednesday's draw, my dollars are going into tickets and my mind is wandering around on what to do with my winnings.

In my state, the estimated back account bounce after the cash option is $614,110,000.00. hat tip to USA Mega.

Some of my ideas so far:
Idea I've wanted to be able to buy a skid of crisp, uncirculated singles. With that windfall, I could order up a pallet of each denomination…even Toms!
Idea There will be road trips to visit every county in America. I want to color in every county in both the hits and entries maps here.
Idea Some sheep to keep my border collies entertained.
Idea A few really old cars with loooong front ends.
Idea A visit to Antarctica for obvious TrackDollar purposes.
Idea Visit the best-named city on the planet in Austria.
Idea Gold
Idea Anyone with a donation canister at a 7-Eleven is going to be happy.
Idea Attend a race at every Nascar venue.
Idea Attend a race at every F1 venue.
Idea Follow the Detroit Red Wings around for a season.
Idea TrackDollar.com's expenses will be well taken care of.

I even just found a Canadian thinking about this!

There are my starters. Do you have anything on your list?

IF I win, I am going to open the biggest no-kill shelter for abused and unwanted animals in the entire freaking STATE of North Carolina, and I will spend the rest of my life caring for animals.

I will have volunteers and paid staff, I will have live-on-premises paid vets, everything needed to make sure the animals get what they need.

I will also make large donations to the diabetes charities I support, and no diabetic who needs insulin or an insulin pump will ever again have to go without.

Customer service desk at supermarket is going to be a zoo tomorrow.

Retiring at 26 sounds good to me. How's that for getting a job?!

If I struck it rich, I'd probably do a lot of the same stuff but on a larger scale. This includes currency tracking. I'd like to warn a guy in Wattsburg, Pennsylvania named Gary.

I'm not likely to even buy a ticket as I have an aversion to volunteering more of my money to the tax man.

As a small businessperson who is self-employed, I already get hosed by the tax man, so I can relate.

It's not that I mind paying taxes...taxes are the price we pay to live in a civilized society...but I sure wish our tax dollars were spent on better things, better things prioritized...and more of the burden placed on the shoulders of those who can bear more of the burden...and still take home more in a year than most of us will make in a lifetime, yaknowit?

Still...1.5 billion currently...how canya pass up a chance like that?

By the way, you DO know you can write off gambling losses on your taxes?
You just cannot write off more than what you have won.  I discovered this one year when I won $1000 on a scratcher.  I immediately wrote off $1000 in losses, too...I figured to heck with them, when I win they got a hand out...then they can share in my losses, too...right?

So I got friends to give me a bunch of their losing scratchers and I kept them in a shoe box, just in case I got audited on that one (I didn't consider this cheating as I spent well enough to have generated $1000 in losers on my own) but I was danged if they were gonna ONLY be there with a hand out when I WON...

I don't wanna burst your bubble, but I keep telling people what the odds are, and they are huge.
1:292 million chance.
Nothing else is even close to that.
Getting hit by lightning is 1:12,000 for an 80 year old.

So keep dreaming, but I personally won't be buying any tickets. My odds are 0, and yours rounds to 0 in all but the most crazy insane cases. Shocked Razz Rolling Eyes

Are you kidding me? The odds are against me winning $1.5864 Billion dollars? This is unbelievably shocking news to me. I had no idea at all. Did anybody else in America know this, too, or am I the only person around who had no idea that it was hard to win a lottery jackpot? I think I'm going to have to go curl up in a ball and cry myself to sleep tonight now that you've burst my bubble.

I think there are too many people out there ready to underestimate the intelligence of others. I doubt there were really that many people who assumed they were absolutely going to win this jackpot, but they had a blast thinking they just might.

It's part of my entertainment budget. It's a better fantasy than most of the movies you're likely to go see, and lasts a lot longer.

Saturday night, standing in line to buy our groceries, I saw on the front page of the local paper, above the fold, the headline "OU Math Professor Says Odds Are Against Winning $800M Powerball Jackpot." That's a "news" story worthy of front page, above the fold placement. Seriously? And someone is going to buy that newspaper to read that story? Is next week's big news story "URGENT UPDATE: 2+2 Still Equals 4: Sign Up for an Oakland University Math Course To Get All The Juicy Details."

'cause apparently there are a lot of people out there who think the odds are better than 50:50 to win untold millions of dollars just by plopping down a couple of bucks.

Hey, ya can't win if ya don't play. And it's a nice little pipe dream for a few days, until the balls get pulled.

As long as you don't like...COUNT ON IT...I mean, the chances ARE astronomical, but hey...you can still win SOMETHING.

I remember once, back in PA...when they had the Super Seven (this is in days before Powerball and Mega Millions) - they pulled eleven balls for that one, and you picked seven balls. To win, you had to match all seven, but eleven total balls got pulled.

Anyway...one time, I had got a ticket...and the first four balls out were mine...and I was FREAKIN...then the next six were not mine...the last one was, so I matched five of seven and won $186.

Another time, I won $1000 on a scratcher.

Yeah, lotto taxes don't make sense to me in a couple ways. You get taxed on all your winnings but can't deduct all your losses. States taxing you on gambling they run feels like double dipping.

I didn't play, the numbers I thought of playing won $4, so I lost $2, which probably would've happened anyway.

The media giving free advertising is often ridiculous, not just for big lotto jackpots.

Yes, gambling can be fun. Instant tickets pay out better than lotto draw games but much worse than casinos. I would prefer a larger chance of a smaller prize, but that doesn't sell as well.

See above. You can deduct from your taxes gambling losses...up to the amount you must claim in winnings. And if you're like me, and pretty sure you bought enough to have losses in the amount you won, you just write the whole darn thing off and keep a shoebox of dead losing scratchers around against the possibility of an audit.
